The Summer of Supporting Small

May 18, 2021

Can you smell that? It’s almost SUMMER! There are so many things to look forward to. Sunshine, barbeques, swimming, sunsets, the list goes on. But our favorite part about summer has to be all of the ways people can get out into their community and support local. It’s time to get ready for a great season, and start planning some fun!

Dress to Impress – Summer Fashion

This season skip the big box stores and head over to a local boutique instead. Boutiques offer hand-picked products that are higher quality and unique to that store. They often carry a smaller stock than big-box retailers, so they’re able to keep up with the latest trends as they switch out inventory more frequently. The best part? Boutiques carry unique items that you can’t find everywhere else. Branch out to your local boutiques this summer to find one-of-a-kind items that fit your style perfectly.

Drive-in Movie Night

Warm summer nights at the local drive-in theater make for the best memories. Children and adults alike can enjoy a movie from the comfort of their car, lawn chairs, or blanket. Dress in your favorite comfy sweats, bring a ball to toss around, and don’t forget to load up on the popcorn and treats!

Get Crafty

DIY art studios have popped up all over the place and for good reason. You get to create beautiful art for your home and have a great time doing it! Instead of going to a store and picking out a generic item, you can make some memories and customize it yourself. Have a girls night out, date night, or bring the whole family to create something cool! Every time you look at what you made you’ll be reminded of the fun time you had.  (Plus, we hear sometimes you can drink wine while you’re there 😉)

It’s Grillin’ Season

Head to a local meat market to pick up higher quality meat, perfect for grilling. Butchers typically stock fresher, locally sourced meat. Walk into a butcher shop and I guarantee you’ll see a cut or type of meat you can’t find at the average grocery store. Not only that, it will have been properly cut and stored. By going to a local butcher, less money ends up in the pocket of the large meat manufacturers and distributors which means more for the farmer & small business owner.

Farm Fresh

Summertime means local Farmers Markets! From produce and plants to homemade candles and furniture, you’ll find a huge array of products and local vendors there. Fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets are typically the freshest and tastiest available. Find hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, furniture, clothing, jewelry, and more. Most vendors can be found creating their next piece right in front of you! It’s not all just about shopping. Enjoy food trucks, live music, activities for the kids, demonstrations, and more. Visiting a Farmers Market is a fun family activity, and is a great way to support local businesses and artists.

This summer, before you go out and buy a new swimsuit, fresh flowers, or food for the cooler from a big box store, stop and think of a local business where your money could get you the same thing (or better) AND go back into your community. Enjoy the warm rays, and remember to shop local.
